Redispersible polymer powder (RDP) is an important material widely used in construction, coatings, adhesives and other fields. It is formed by spray drying emulsion and has good dispersibility and adhesion.
1. Raw material preparation
The main raw materials for making redispersible latex powder include:
Polymer emulsion: such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), styrene-acrylate (SA), etc.
Protective colloid: such as polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, etc., used to prevent particles from sticking during the drying process.
Defoamer: used to eliminate foam in the production process, such as silicone oil and polyether defoamer.
Stabilizer: such as sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), sodium polyacrylate, etc., used to stabilize the emulsion system.
2. Emulsion preparation
Select appropriate monomers according to the formula for polymerization reaction to prepare a polymer emulsion with the required properties. During the preparation of the emulsion, the following key steps should be noted:
Monomer selection and ratio: Select appropriate monomers, such as ethylene, vinyl acetate, etc., according to the purpose of the final product, and determine their ratio to ensure the performance of the emulsion.
Emulsion polymerization: Usually free radical polymerization is used to polymerize the monomers into a polymer emulsion. The polymerization reaction needs to be carried out under strictly controlled conditions, including temperature, stirring speed, initiator addition rate, etc.
Addition of protective colloid and stabilizer: Add appropriate amount of protective colloid and stabilizer to the emulsion to prevent the emulsion from agglomerating during the subsequent drying process.
3. Pretreatment of emulsion
Before spray drying, the emulsion needs to be pretreated, mainly including the following steps:
Filtration: Remove impurities in the emulsion through a filter or centrifuge to ensure the purity of the emulsion.
Concentration: Concentrate the emulsion to a suitable solid content through evaporation or membrane filtration to improve drying efficiency.
4. Spray drying
Spray drying is the core process for making redispersible latex powder. The specific steps are as follows:
Selection of spray drying tower: Select appropriate spray drying equipment according to the properties and output of the emulsion. Commonly used equipment include centrifugal spray drying tower and pressure spray drying tower.
Setting of drying parameters: Set appropriate inlet air temperature, outlet air temperature and spray pressure. Generally, the inlet air temperature is controlled at 150-200℃, and the outlet air temperature is controlled at 60-80℃.
Spray drying process: The pretreated emulsion is atomized into fine droplets through a sprayer, and quickly contacts with hot air in the drying tower, and the water is evaporated to form fine dry powder particles.
Powder collection: The dried latex powder is collected by a cyclone separator or a bag filter. The collected latex powder needs to be cooled and large particles are removed by screening to ensure the uniformity of the product.
5. Post-processing and packaging
The dried redispersible latex powder needs to be properly post-processed to ensure its stable performance and safe storage. Post-processing mainly includes:
Anti-caking treatment: Add anti-caking agents (such as talcum powder, silicon dioxide) to the surface of the latex powder to prevent the powder from agglomerating during storage and transportation.
Packaging: According to customer needs, the latex powder is packaged in moisture-proof and dust-proof bags or barrels. Humidity needs to be strictly controlled during the packaging process to prevent the powder from absorbing moisture.
6. Quality Control
During the production process, strict quality control is required to ensure that the performance indicators of the redispersible latex powder meet the requirements. Common quality control items include:
Particle size distribution: The particle size distribution of the powder is detected by a laser particle size analyzer to ensure the uniformity of the product.
Adhesion strength: Test the adhesion strength of latex powder on different substrates to verify its adhesion performance.
Redispersibility: Mix the latex powder with water to observe whether it can be evenly dispersed and restored to an emulsion state.
7. Application and precautions
Redispersible latex powder is widely used in building mortar, tile adhesives, exterior wall insulation systems and other fields. The following points need to be noted when using:
Storage conditions: Latex powder should be stored in a dry and cool environment to avoid high temperature and humidity.
Usage ratio: According to specific application requirements, add latex powder reasonably to obtain the best performance.
With other additives: Redispersible latex powder is often used with other additives (such as cellulose ether, defoamer) to enhance the performance of the material.
Redispersible latex powder with good performance can be successfully produced. In actual production, it is necessary to adjust according to specific production conditions and product requirements to ensure stable and reliable quality of the final product.
